Abstract: This paper reports on a field study of frazil ice accumulation under a solid ice cover. Maximum flow velocities vary in the range of 40-60 cm/s, with Froude numbers in the range of 0.08-0.14 for apparently stable flow sections. The results have been compared with earlier findings about the critical velocity for the progress of an ice front against a current.
