Abstract: The fundamental processes of cooling, ice formation, ice movement, ice cover formation and break up are reviewed together with the relevant theories and recent advances in research. The close interrelations between fluvial and ice hydraulics are emphasised. The problems of which a better understanding is considered desirable are listed and finally the papers received are grouped accordingly.
