Abstract: This paper reports on the research on the application of acoustic emission techniques to problems of forecasting ice jams and ice breakup in rivers. Simple experiments have been conducted to correlate acoustic emission and temperature changes in ice. Based on these results, the feasibility of monitoring acoustic emission activity, predicting ice breakup, and forewarning of ice jams are discussed.
