Abstract: Alteration of the natural hydrologic river regime due to hydraulic project construction results in the transformation of the downstream channel. Field observation data on channel degradation below 20 major hydroelectric projects in the USSR are analyzed and generalized. Defined are the most essential manifestations of river channel metamorphosis which are to be incorporated into the design of hydroelectric projects and flow control structures downstream from them.
