Abstract: For the winter navigation, the prediction of the first freeze-up and of ice cover formation both in natural conditions and in artificial reservoirs is essential. Because of it, we concentrated our efforts on the freeze-up date forecasts worked up on the heat-balance basis complemented by the synoptic-situations method, all this being checked on existing water development with a relatively good agreement rate between calculated and observed values.
