Abstract: In a general case, non-freezing canals are divided into five reaches characterized by specific ice conditions - the absence of ice, formation of frazil ice, anchor ice, or frazil ice cover. The equations are presented for determining the length of the reaches, water temperatures and ice formations; the effect of heat transfer by turbulent heat conductivity along the flow is analysed. The data are given on the freezing-over of hydraulic structures due to water level fluctuations and on the intensity of ice cohesion to the surfaces covered by hydrophobic materials.
