Abstract: A brief history of the use of explosives for ice jam removal is discussed. Ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil is considered the best explosive for ice jam control because of its cost and safety features. For maximum effect, the charge should be placed in the water below the ice. A curve is included which gives maximum crater hole diameter as a function of the cube root of the charge weight.
