Abstract: We investigate the mechanism of the spatio-temporal changes in the M2 tidal amplification due to the decrease of the bay length in the Ariake Sea. The results show that (1) the amplification factor increases in the whole area due to the decrease in energy dissipation caused by the decrease in the bay length, (2) the amplification factor changes less in response to the change in the tidal force due to the decrease in nonlinearity caused by the weakening of the tidal current, and (3) the resonant tide decreases due to the decrease in the eigen period. This effect is less visible at the mouth of the bay, but it has a greater effect at the head of the bay. The energy dissipation at the mouth of the bay, where strong tidal currents occur and the effect of bay length change is large, plays a particularly important role in these phenomena.
