Abstract: This paper presents the application of hierarchical cartesian grids to the volume-of-fluid method (VOF) for the purpose of efficient 3-D analysis of free surface flows in rivers and flooded areas. The interpolation processes of the variables in a staggered grid and the pressure at the surface cells in a single-phase model were presented. Moreover, the calculation of liquid-phase fluxes across the refined-cell face is shown. The result of validation using a two-dimensional dam break shows that the VOF method can be applied to the hierarchical cartesian grid with the same accuracy as a uniform grid.
