Abstract: Floods are natural hazards that are expected to take place in the floodplains. Excess urbanization, global warming and resulting climate change cause floods to occur more frequent than ever. In the recent decade, floods become more frequent and more devastating nearly in the all continents. Both structural measures (grey solutions) and non-structural ones are frequently considered for mitigating adverse effects of floods. Naturebased solutions that integrate traditional floods measures with ecology and environment for mitigating adverse effects of floods are encouraged in the recent years. However, their effectiveness is not proven yet, at least for floods of 100- or 500-years recurrence interval. Agva Town is selected as a study area and its current flood risk is determined. Furthermore, detention basin, a nature-based solution, and grey solution are implemented as a flood mitigation measure separately. It is shown that detention basin significantly reduces flood risk in the study area for the flood recurrence period of 100 years.
