Abstract: The paper discusses how to properly balance new and increasing water demands in respect to the environmental protection of a selected river course. A study of scheduled steps useful to designing hydropower's plant's production and contextually satisfying environmental needs is herein unfolded. The paper considers a real plant located in a river of intermittent flow regime with sudden floods and prolonged low flows. The analysis aims to be a paradigmatic example of: power production, proper compensatory measures, and shareable social expectations. The paper is organized as follows: in chapter 1 the introduction is presented, § 2 deals the study case, thereafter the plant's technical details and direct surveys are discussed and in the last chapters the results and conclusions are drawn.
