Abstract: The United Nations defines ‘net zero’ as the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere, by the oceans and forests. Achieving net zero by the year 2050 is considered essential for limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, a goal adopted in the 2015 Paris Agreement. This issue includes articles on the role of water in climate change mitigation, embedding low-carbon solutions into a water asset lifecycle, assessing GHG emissions for water bodies, innovation and action in the water sector in the United States, and the role of hydropower in the effort achieve carbon neutrality goals in China. IAHR through its conferences, congresses, and the work of its technical committees is focusing on specific aspects of the nexus between water and climate change mitigation. IAHR also is aiming at stimulating a broader dialogue on this issue by organizing periodically webinars, such that on “Hydro-Environment Pathways to Carbon Neutrality” in May 2002, and that on “Net Zero and Water: National Approaches and Solutions” in November 2022. IAHR also contributes expert perspectives via its various technical committees to major international processes such as the “UN-Water Technical Workshop on Water and Climate Change Mitigation Inter-Dependencies” during the 2023 Bonn Climate Change Conference.
