Abstract:

The spatial and temporal distribution of water resources in China is markedly uneven, presenting a mismatch with the distribution of population, resources, and productive capacities. Undertaking interbasin and inter-regional water transfers is a pivotal approach to address the pronounced disparities in China’s water resource allocation and to reconcile the tensions between water supply and demand. After years of development, China has established the world’s largest hydraulic engineering infrastructure. As a subset of this infrastructure, water diversion projects play a pivotal role in optimizing the allocation of water resources.
