Abstract: The magnitude and frequency of floods is influenced both by natural and human factors. Cata-strophic events by flooding in small water courses are often due to man-made structures and/or the lack of work maintenance. An analysis of the effects of 12th October 1991 flood in Central-Southern Sicily is reported in this paper. This event damaged buildings, infrastructures, historical monuments and, more importantly, caused the loss of 6 lives because flow sections had been artifi-cially narrowed. The high number of deaths in relation to the damage caused is discussed. Moreo-ver, the need to promote activities to prevent potentially dangerous works, to supervise man activities has been highlighted. Finally, it has been demonstrated that people need to be instructed on how to behave when facing emergencies.
