Abstract: Accidental chemical spills can cause serious environmental damage and are a real challenge to theenvironmental/hydraulic engineer.Engineering challenges are rivaled by the social/political/institutional problems that accompany response,clean-up or restoration operations. In this paper, casestudies are discussed of the Rhine River pesticide spill in 1986,the Alaska oil spill and clean-up of1989-92,bioaccumulation of persistent hydrophobic organic chemicals, and the continuing Chernobylclean-up of radionuclide contaminants in soil and water.
