Abstract: The spreading process of a buoyant fluid (oil) under, through, and over a porous media (a broken ice cover) floating in water is presented. A preliminary numerical model is developed by integrating the oil spreading under ice with flow through porous media and then the spreading of oil on water obstructed by pieces of ice. The results are compared with experimental data. The study provide new insight into the problem. The preliminary model presented here agrees reasonably well with the observed data.
