Abstract: It is shown that the diffusion of oil pollutants from the sea to a lagoon can be effectively prevented by means of the typical floating barriers employed in lagoon channels or inlets only as long as the value of the h/H ratio between the amplitude of the tide in the lagoon and the sea is close to 1. When this condition is not fulfilled and the risk of pollution exists, it becomes necessary, in risk areas, to deploy in advance, offshore, all the necessary means for the containment and rapid recovery of the oil-based contaminants.
