Abstract: Research and development on a waste water treatment by methanefermentation, which consumes less energy and generates less excess sludge thantreatment with activated sludge, has significance. However, cases of sewagetreatment by methane fermentation are very rare, and the application of thistechnique outside of tropical and subtropical areas would involve manyproblems yet to be solved. For,example, methane fermentation should takeplace in an ambient temperature, and microorganisms should proliferate andaccumulate in high concentrations when the oxidation-reduction potential isnot low enough. Moreover, reducing molecular weight and solubilizingsuspending organic matter are also problems to be solved because of thecharacteristically low ratio of dissolved BOD in sewage to total BOD.
