Abstract: A depth-averaged harbor hydrodynamics model (HHM) was linked with the U. S. EPA's WASP3 water quality model for the simulation of hydrodynamic and water quality. conditions of Keelung Harbor in Taiwan, ROC. The harbor hydrodynamics were resolved by HHM with a uniform 63 m by 63 m finite difference grid while the water quality conditions (DO and BOD_5 only) were resolved by WASP3 with variable finite segments (control volumes) of coarser dimensions. The calculated tidal hydrodynamics from HHM were averaged across the control surfaces and over a representative tidal cycle to become steady-state hydraulic input to WASP3. The calculated steady-state DO and BOD_5 compared favorably with field data taken in Keelung Harbor. The linked models were used to simulate present and future water quality conditions in the Harbor under different cleanup scenarios. The results were used to characterize and demonstrate the effects of different harbor cleanup strategies.
