Abstract: A new Lagrangian method is presented for solving the unsteady 2-D Navier-Stokes equations written in the vorticity - stream function formula-tion. The method is based on the discrete vortex or "cloud-in-cell" method. At each t1me step, the advection and the diffusion part as well as the Poisson equation for the stream function are solved separately. In solving these sub-problems, unstructured grids are used: special schemes and multigrid method shave been developed which ensure the fast solution preserving the advantages of the Lagrangian system. As an example, application to the problem of shear layer evolution is presented.
