Abstract: Modelling of unsteady flow in open channels by the application of numericalmethods is an essential subject of research in the field of hydraulics and waterresources engineering. To date,a great deal and variety of models have beendeveloped for the simulations of time-dependent flows in river or canal systems. The earlier models adopted either the finite difference method(FDM)or the meth-od of characteristics for numerical formulations of the unsteady, open channelflow equations, and then handled relatively straightforward flow problems,e.g.,flow in a single-reach or at the utmost simply bifurcating channel. In the lastfifteen years, however, some investigators have attempted the application of thefinite element method(FEM)to this one-dimensional flow problem, and on theother hand, modelling efforts have been extended over complex interconnectedflow problems which may arise in a channel network with flow-control structuressuch as gates, weirs, drops, ete.
