Abstract: Developed herein is a continuous-distribution expression for a flow velocity in ice-covered channels. The expression is based on the powerform relationship often used for describing variation of flow velocity with depth, and is developed such that it can be used to describe depth variation of shear stress and kinematic viscosity. It is intended that a continuous-distribution expression, such as is presented here, replace the conventional method of treating ice-covered flows as comprising two independent flow layers, one associated with the channel bed, the other with the ice-cover underside.
