Abstract: The turbulence structure and distribution of boundary shear stress in a trapezoidal open channel were measured in an experimental channel. As the flow structure was characterized by a secondary flow along the side wall of the channel, this latter flow was investigated by use of a flow visualization technique. In spite of its elusiveness, this flow could be made visible and photographed by use of the refined tracer method. The relation between this secondary flow and the distribution of boundary shear stress is discussed.
