Phase-Averaged Turbulence Measurements in the Separated Shear-Layer Region of Flow Around a Square Cylinder

Abstract: The separated turbulent shear-layer region in the flow around a square cylinder has been investigated experimentally. Quasi-periodic vortex shedding induces a large-scale unsteadi-ness, which is lost in conventional long-time averaging. A technique for obtaining phase-averaged turbulence statistics was developed to examine the importance of the time-varying component. Preliminary results in the separated shear layer region are presented.
