Abstract: Laboratory measurements of the velocity field in a turbulent jet flowing into an enclosure showed that there was no effect on the profiles of mean and turbulent velocity due to the environment flow. However, the momentum flux was not conserved using the data which had been collected following conventional methods. A low frequency flapping motion was observed and a simple analysis of this motion demonstrated that this could explain the apparent momentum loss. Evaluation of reported data showed a similar loss.
