Incorporating Sediment Management in Short-Term Hydro Scheduling

Abstract: The abrasive action of the sediment particles leads to the erosion in hydro turbines, the loss of power generation, and the increase of the operation and maintenance costs. In this paper, two functionalities have been developed to incorporate sediment management in the optimization of short-term hydro scheduling. They intend to control sediment intake to the turbines by changing the operational strategy. The first functionality regulates the maximum water release to the plant that must instantly vary depending on the water level of the upstream reservoir. The second functionality shifts the operating point of the turbine from the high to the low discharge area by introducing an extra discharge cost in the optimization model. These two functionalities have been implemented in the Short-term Hydro Optimization Program (SHOP), an operational short-term hydro scheduling tool used by many hydro producers in Scandinavia as well as in Switzerland, Austria, and Chile. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and importance of the functionalities for obtaining the optimal dispatch plant that can fulfill the requirement of sediment management.
