Abstract: One particular category of spillway consists of an overflow,or opening in a dam, generating a jet of water which plunges through the atmosphere, impinging on a cushionof water in the stilling basin, and from there returning to the river course via a weir atthe downstream end of the stilling basin. Such basins may be concrete-lined or simplynatural scour holes, but in either case it is important to understand the nature of theturbulence and pressure fluctuations generated near tne solid_boundaries of the basin.Good examples of such impinging jet spillways include Morrow Point Dam,USA.,P.K.LeRoux Dam,Africa,Crystal Dam,USA.,and Kariba Dam,Africa.
