Abstract: Similitude criteria for mixing flows in a free-surface circulation vessel with regard to turbulence characteristics and densimetric forces are discussed. The experiments represent a common simple case involving a jet discharging into a constant volume of fluid. Residence time distributions are investigated by means of a tracer technique. Autosimilitude is obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers and densimetric Froude numbers. Two limiting values of these numbers for the validity of autosimilitude are found.
