Abstract: This paper presents a numerical procedure for the prediction of nonequi-librium sediment concentration profiles forming when a steady uniform stream of clear water flows over a bed made of loose material. The adjustment of the sedi-ment concentration profiles is simulated by accounting for the sediment particles induced buoyancy through a Reynolds Stress Model approach. Equations for the stresses ■ and the sediment concentration flux ■ are introduced to ap-proximate the modeled governing transport equations. A simple empirical function is employed to specify a near-bed effective concentration as bed boundary condi-tion. The mathematical model is validated by simulating experimental results of a laboratory study and the accuracy of the solution is tested by comparing to an analytical solution to the problem. Goodness of the methodology employed is con-cluded.
