Lateral Mixing in Open Channels-the Important Processes

Abstract: The processes involved in lateral mixing in open channel flow are discussed. It is shown that mixing caused by fairly weak secondary currents is as important as turbulent diffusion. Three different mechanisms for generating secondary currents in straight, open channels are presented.
