Abstract: An integrated programme of fieldwork and modelling is used to investigate turbulent dispersion mechanisms in the larger rivers in the U. K. Measurements of turbulent velocities were made in the River Severn, England, and these data will be used to provide the environmental parameters for further development of a random walk model of contaminant dispersion. This particle tracking model has been used to simulate 2-d turbulent shear flow and shows good agreement with laboratory results and with other theoretical models.
