Abstract: A new velocity distribution equation is introduced to estimate the diffusion coefficient needed in study of pollutant transport. The equation is capable of modeling and simulating the velocity distribution and, hence, diffusion coefficient in an open channel, from the water su rface down to the channel bed. It is also advantageous from the viewpoint of parameter estimation in practical applications.
