Abstract: The ever growing demand of pure water for both civil and industrial utilization, on one hand, and the pollution of water resources on the other hand, make the problem of water quality maintenance and improvement of primary importance. ENEL, the Italian Electricity Generating Agency, is directly engaged in preserving water quality according to Government regulations. The impact of new power plants on the environment is determined mainly by means of mathematical models. In the present paper the authorspresent a mathematical mode l for the simula tion in 1-D of the advection-dispersion of pollutants in rivers. An application of the model is shown for which field measurements were available in order to verify the model response.
