Abstract: For efficient water pollution control on streams information isneeded on how the tributary flows and wastewater discharges mixwith the water in the recipient and where necessary, measures mustbe taken to improve mixing conditions.Information on in-stream mix-ing is especiaily important along the backwater reaches above dams, where the changed flow conditions may warrant modifications in theinflow/discharge patterns. In preparation for this contingency thepresent mixing conditions were surveyed over the round 200 km iongDanube section upstream of Budapest, hoping to arrive from the meas-urement data at conclusions on the conditions in the impounded riv-er.Two reports on the early studies(Muszkalay,Starosolszky 1987a,Muszkalay,"Starosolszky 1987b)have described the mixing process ofthe wastewaters discharged at two critical points, over two streamsections along urban areas. The data of the measurements performedalong the entire reach between Rajka and Budapest are analyzed inthe present paper.
