Abstract: Experiments have been carried out to determine the forces exerted on yawed cylinders performing sinusoidal oscillations very close to a plane bed. Typical results relevant to the normal forces are presented in terms of the drag and the inertia coefficients occurring in the Morison formula. It has been found that the coefficients are essentially insensitive to the yaw angle. The root-mean-square values of the normal and the lift forces decrease monotonically with the Keulegan-Carpenter number. Experiments with the oscillating cylinder in the presence of steady current show that Morison formula does not fit the time variation of the normal force.
