Abstract: Design methods for mounds breakwaters are generally based on laboratory tests.Extrapolation of results to field is always affected by some indeterminationboth for scale effects and fo inability of laboratory instrumentation in reproducing prototype conditions. A field analysis of breakwater behaviour is necessary to evaluate capability ofempirical design in predicting the damage level due to wave attack. The aim of this study is to compare the in site damage, measured on a provisionalbreakwater, with theoretical stability analysis. A computer model has been used for this purpose. It describes the damage progression as a function of real sea state records. Some conclusions are reported on the sensitivity of theoretical formulas and computer model.
