Abstract: When storm waves break on vertical coastal structures, the momentum exchange be-tween the water mass in motion and the structure wil1 cause shock pressures ofhigh magnitude which are, however,of a very short duration.Because of the com-plexity of the physical process involved,no rigorous theory describing the phe-nomenon has been established up to now.
