Abstract: In Calabria, southern Italy, the stretch of coastline facing the Tyrrhenian sea has for many years undergone severe erosion, exposing vital railways and roads, together with important tourist resorts to the direct action of waves. In order to protect both the coastline and the major North-South road and rail communications, some sea defence works have been built, in the last two years, following a design laid down in a global masterplane for this area. In this paper we examine a number of comparisons which were made, with particular reference to the severe storms experienced in January 1987. The comparisons deal with the behaviour of the recent coast defence works, built along the coastline between Diamante and Belvedere, and the behaviour of the pre-existent defence structures, which are located nearby. Finally we also examine the importance of the location of the defence structures, with regard both to their stability and to their efficiency in defending the coastline.
