Abstract: The first directional wind-wave field data, in the St. Lawrence Gulf, have been gathered in 1987. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of those records, where their mean directionality is compared to the local wind data. First the significant wave parameters are used to group them in three catego-ries: the local wave field, the St. Lawrence swell, and finaly the oceanic swell from the Atlantic. Only the first category shows a significant relation with the local wind data, but even then a notable difference exists between the wave and wind directionality. This difference is later explained by the action of the near by coast, which causes important fetch variations and consequently forces the wave field to grow along an axis different from the wind.
