Abstract: In construction and design of coastal structures,it is very important toexamine the physical influences of waves on the structures through experimentswith physical models. To meet this requirement, the Technical Research Centerof the Kansai Electric Power Inc.has completed new coastal hydraulic testingfacilities. The facilities consist mainly of a three-dimensional non-reflect-ing wave generator,a measuring carriage and a flow visualization system. They are systematically controlled by a computer system so that highly auto-mated operation of the system and high accuracy in experiment can be ensured. The non-reflecting wave generator is able to make desired waves continuouslyand uniformly in the test tank, without allowing the reflected waves(fromboundaries such as models of coastal structures and tank walls)to re-reflectat the waveboards. This paper gives design philosophy of the wave generator and some resu1tsfrom the basic tests carried out with this wave generator.
