Abstract: Effect of internal flow on marine riser response is studied using a numerical model. The equations for three dimensional motion of a tubular beam under tension, conveying fluid and with external pressure, are derived using an energy approach. The finite element approach is used to discretize the equations of motion and a dynamic analysis is performed in tlhe frequency domain by linearizing the hydrodynamic force term. A typical prodtion riser system is considered to illustrate the effect of internal flow on riser response. Finally, the effectiveness of torus shaped partially filled ring-type nutation dampers in controlling marine riser response is studied. The concept appears to be promising in controlling flow induced vibrations of offshore structures.
