Abstract: This paper examines the representation of groins in numerical models of shoreline change, with emphasis placed on longshore sand bypassing and groin permeability. Results obtained with two different calculation methods are compared to reported and postulated properties of groins in the field. Although the simulated shoreline change is reasonable, the choice of one method over the other cannot be made because of ambiguity arising from lack of both suitable data and objective procedures for specifying groin properties.
