Abstract: Results from an experimental investigation on local scour around cylindrical bridge piers with non-uniform, cohesionless sediments together with analyses of published data are combined to present a more complete description of local scour around bridge piers. Experimental data from Baker [1] were used in the analyses. In addition to this, findings from Chin [4] who investigated the formation of natural armour layers under a constant applied shear stress were used to supplement the scour results. The study found that the relative equilibrium scour depth at bridge piers is related to the geometric standard deviation of the particle size distribution with the ratio of the approach velocity to the velocity which produces the (first) maximum equilibrium scour depth, Uo/Ua as the third parameter.
