Abstract: The response of alluvial rivers to natural or man-made disturbances imposed upon them isoften studied using computer-based numerical simulation.Predictive use of simulation, both foranticipation and management of nonequilibrium river response, demands that the simulation bebased on the best possible combination of sound physical principles, consistent mathematical con-ceptualization of these principles, and stable, convergent numerical solution of the resulting gov-erning equations.
