Abstract: Gradation ofriver sediment is usually highly nonuniform. In an alternating aggradation/degradation process, gradation will change vertically as well as longitudinaily due to hydraulic sorting, and hydraulic characteristics will change accordingly. Because of these changes, the process becomes irreversible. In this study, series of experiments were conducted to studythe irreversibility of an alternating aggradation/degradation process. The 'results showthat the recovery rate decreases as standard deviation of sediment gradation increases.
