Abstract: Suspended sedinent transport in estuaries is of concern frcm the engineering aspects of highmaintenance dredging costs,as well as the ecological problems associated with high turbidityand heavy metal contaminaticn. Many estuaries experience a turbidity maximam region.This well known phenonenon has beenattributed to baroclinic circulation,tidal prping,resuspension and deposition of suspendedsediments,flocculaticn associated with salinity changes and the death of microorganisns in thebrackish water zone. The coplex problems associated with the interaction between estuarine hydrodynanics,stratification,erosion,deposition and turbulent transport indicate that a conbination of alarge scale mathenatical modeling and intensive field data can shed light on the primarymechanisms involved in a given estuary. The results of such an investigation are reported here.
