Abstract: Prediction formulas are proposed for the determination of particle sizes of bed load in gravel-bed channels. This is done by means of a novel bed load sampler which gathers data automatically and continuously (8). The semi-empirical formulas were derived from the concept of discrete particle movement along a smooth surface, involving a couple of velocity profiles of channel flow. The result shows that the particle size can be determined once the travelling velocity of bed load as well as the average flow velocity or shear velocity is known.
