Abstract: Numerical simulations are performed to clarify the mechanism of momentum trans-fer in compound channel flows. An algebraic stress model along with the k-ε model is emp1oyed to calculate 3-dimensional flow fields and the apparent shear stress on the vertical interface between the main channel and the flood plain. The behavior of apparent shear stress with the variation of cro8s-sectional shape and flood plain roughness is well reproduced and is also explained through the change of the ratio between advection and turbulent diffusion.
