Abstract: The three-dimensional mass-sediment continuity equation is integrated upon the vertical, with appropiate assumptions, allowing the extension of the classical Exner equation to include diffusive terms. The resulting equation should render more accurate results, particularly in zones with high gradients of sediment concentrations, which typically occur during scouring processes around hydraulic structures. Also the classical entrainment formula (which includes vertical diffusion and vertical convection) is extended to account for diffusive terms that appear with non-horizontal beds. These additional terms are relevant in the presence of strong bed slopes occurring during scouring processes.
