The Behaviour of Air Pockets at a Dropshaft/Tunnel Junction

Abstract: This paper reports the results of an experimental study into the behaviour of air pockets forming at a dropshaft/tunnel bend. A range of experimental parameters are varied including bend radius, tunnel slope, air/water ratio and Froude Number. Experimental results are compared with theoretical models of the complex two-phase flow, showing reasonable correlation for each regime of flow.
